Your Guide to Obtaining a Marriage License in Frenchville, Maine

Embarking on the journey of marriage is an exciting time, and in Frenchville, we aim to make the process of obtaining your marriage license as smooth as possible. Here’s what you need to know to begin your new chapter together:

Completing Your Marriage Intentions Worksheet

The first step is to complete the marriage intentions worksheet. Both parties must sign the document in the presence of the Clerk or a Notary Public, affirming their eligibility to marry.

Filing Notice of Intentions

  • For Maine Residents: If you both live in different Maine municipalities, you only need to file in one of your home towns.
  • For Non-Maine Residents: File your Notice of Intentions in any municipal office in Maine. Once issued, you’re free to marry anywhere within the state.

No Waiting Period

Maine no longer enforces a waiting period between filing intentions and issuing the marriage license.

Validity of Marriage License

Licenses are valid for 90 days from the filing date of your intentions.

Documentation for Previously Married Individuals

You must provide proof of how previous marriages ended:

  • For divorce: Original divorce papers from all previous marriages.
  • For widowhood: A certified copy of the deceased spouse’s death certificate.

Marriage License Fees

  • Filing Fee: $40.00
  • Certified Copy of Marriage Certificate: $15.00 (first copy), $6.00 (additional copies)

To streamline your visit to the Town Office easier, you can print and fill out the Marriage Intentions forms ahead of time, just don’t sign them until you’re with the Town Clerk or a notary. All the details have to be manually entered into the state website to issue the license, which takes a while. Be sure to arrive at least an hour before closing if you’re requesting a marriage license. Please bring proof of identity such as a drivers license.

If you have questions or need assistance throughout the marriage license process, the Frenchville Town Office staff are more than happy to help.
